Abstract

DEVELOPMENTAL RESEARCH PROJECT PROGRAM SUMMARY The Developmental Research Project Program (DRPP) is integral to the mission of AK INBRE 5. The overall goals of the Developmental Research Project Program are to increase capacity in Alaska for biomedical and behavioral health research and to build a pipeline of students and faculty in Alaska who seek biomedical research careers. To this end, the Developmental Research Project Program invests in AK-based human capacity and research programs to build excellence in biomedical research, training, and education. One Health, the continuing theme from AK INBRE 3 and 4, recognizes the developing expertise and interconnections among network investigators in the biomedical, animal, and environmental sciences. The One Health theme promotes opportunities to build interdisciplinary collaborations to increase the well-being of individuals, families, and communities in Alaska. The DRPP (AK INBRE 5 Overall Specific Aim 2) will build on the research capacity, expertise, and interdisciplinary collaborations in an expanded network with the goal of providing support for research project and pilot project leaders, their research mentoring relationships, and their professional growth. The Developmental Research Project Program will accomplish this through two specific aims. Specific Aim 1) Provide funding opportunities that enhance biomedical research at the network institutions. The Developmental Research Project Program will provide grants to fund Research Projects and Pilot Projects to improve the research success and productivity of AK INBRE 5 network researchers. The program will specifically encourage new and early-stage investigators and incentivize student engagement in research. We expect to support up to four Research Projects and up to seven Pilot Projects per year. Specific Aim 2) Facilitate mentorship and career development opportunities for Research Project and Pilot Project leaders with AK INBRE 5 awards. The Developmental Research Project Program will financially and operationally support scientific mentoring and career development opportunities for investigators with active AK INBRE Research Projects or Pilot Projects. The Developmental Research Project Program will solicit Research Project and Pilot Project applications from eligible faculty and researchers at the AK INBRE 5 network partners. AK INBRE 5 is committed to the coordination and sharing of resources among the NIH infrastructure programs in AK and continuing leadership and project administration throughout the network.
