Abstract
Project Summary/Abstract Administrative Core Component The Administrative Core (AC) will provide logistical support and organization for the Idaho INBRE-5 Network and coordinate a Student Research Program (SRP), a Data Science Core (DSC), and a faculty Developmental Research Project Program (DRPP). The PD/PI, PC, and Directors are well-qualified with INBRE experience and will constitute the Management Group. Three governance committees include two with representatives from all 12 Network Institutions and an External Advisory Committee with scientific expertise, mentoring experience, and knowledge of the research/workforce climate of Idaho. Together, this administrative leadership will guide the Network decisions and initiatives. The AC will build an environment to encourage statewide/regional research collaboration and provide opportunities for faculty and students by: (i) facilitating communication among investigators; (ii) coordinating training and mentoring for faculty and students; (iii) overseeing research activities; (iv) providing conflict resolution; (v) prioritizing infrastructure needs; and (vi) assuring faculty access to state-of-the-art research facilities. INBRE-5 will increase faculty research participation at all Network institutions with special emphasis at the primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs). The SRP will provide a broad continuum of research opportunities for undergraduate students, in both academic and industrial settings, to generate and enhance a skilled workforce for Idaho. A series of interlocking progressively intense student research experiences involve all 12 Network institutions and comprise a âpipeline to health research careersâ. Central to the SRP is mentoring and career advising for graduate and/or professional training. Our current programs allow any student in Idaho who has an interest in and talent for biomedical research to find an opportunity to pursue that activity in Idaho. To achieve this goal trainees will be recruited, retained, and supported through the academic pipeline at all stages. The SRP will also improve science curricula. The AC will oversee the DSC to maximize use of facilities and educational resources. It will coordinate the DRPP faculty development, use clear, attainable milestones to guide success, and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations. It will manage the Regional Alliance of INBRE Networks (RAIN), an innovative effort with all seven Western IDeA states to expand faculty and student opportunities, maximize regional Core use, and reduce redundancies. INBRE will build exceptional connectivity with numerous complementary programs such as COBREs, CTRs, and Bridges. Evaluation is key to ensure INBRE resources are used to maximum benefit, activities have high-value outcomes, and the scientific Network remains cohesive. The AC will oversee a plan for evaluation and monitor/document progress of the Cores and Programs. Summative outcomes will be used in formative evaluations to adjust programmatic activities for continued Network success to build Idahoâs research capacity.
