Abstract
In FY 2023, our main endeavor in this project was to follow up on our 2018 finding that Bacillus subtitlis spores can be given to mice to eradicate S. aureus intestinal colonization, which is based on our observation that bacillal quorum-quenching lipopeptides inhibit S. aureus quorum-sensing, which we also found is essential for intestinal colonization. We set up and completed a clinical trial in healthy S. aureus-colonized volunteers in Thailand, who were given B. subtilis probiotic spores. This treatment, in this phase 2 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, resulted in > 95% reduction in the overall numbers of S. aureus colonizing the human body without affecting the intestinal microbiome.
