Abstract

The Administrative Management Branch (AMB) works closely with the Office of the Scientific Director (OSD) to remodel and update space within the Division of Intramural Research (DIR). The DIR has over 65 laboratories, administrative offices, and cores. Laboratories with common intellectual and scientific interests were reorganized and have been co-located in six building clusters on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Complementing the physical proximity of laboratories will be affinity groups (AG) of scientists with shared research interests. The facilities allow for AGs to promote scientific exchange, collaborations, and the formation of new multidisciplinary teams to address new research ideas in a fluid and dynamic manner. Space is modified accordingly when a new hire is brought on-board. The AMB works closely with the Investigator to meet the needs of the science. As an Investigator leaves the DIR, AMB works to close out the laboratory according to the NIH rules and regulations. A space database is maintained to document all the space with the DIR as well as detailed space maps. This is shared with all the Investigators.
