Abstract
The BETA Center is being developed as a trans-NIH resource to aid other IRP researchers in connecting with engineering practices and resources to apply to their own research. To kickoff this new center, we held two listening sessions with potentially key stakeholders from multiple ICs to provide feedback on what they would find useful from such an engineering resource. Progress has been made towards each of these endeavors and the BETA Center community of investigators is growing. 1.Research Collaboration Facilitation 1:1 research collaboration connections to innovate solutions 2. Core Lab Services IDEAS, BEPS, AIM Molecular Tracer Imaging Center Systems and computational biology expertise and consultation 3. MakerSpace 3-D printers, Metal 3D printer, machine shop, microfabrication, computer aided design (CAD). 4. Trainee and Recruitment Programs Recruiting nationally for BESIP, Undergrad internships, Postbac IRTA, Postdoc positions, Recruitment and professional development initiatives IRP Bioengineering community building Summer undergraduates: Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) and BETA Center Summer Internship Program BESIP program hosted 16 summer interns for 2023 New pilot program this year: 6 BETA Center Summer Interns hired this year with first time researchers and mostly from minority-serving institutions. They were mentored in labs across three different ICs: Future plans for BETA Center to fund 4 NIH OITE-PEP scholars FY24 in arrangement with OITE
