Abstract
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA); National Institutes of Health, seek to continue to support the collection and distribution of human brain tissue and biospecimens for research on neurologic, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders. The objective of this initiative is to provide access to human disease and control brains and related biospecimens, facilitate proactive involvement of the disease advocacy and patient communities, and more efficiently acquire, process, characterize, curate, store, and distribute these tissues for research with the ultimate goal of reducing the burden of nervous system disorders. In order to do so, the NIH will continue to support collection sites through contracts (i.e., the NIH Brain and Tissue Repositories [NBTR]) to provide services that will actively acquire, process, store, curate, preserve, and distribute central nervous system and related biological specimens to qualified investigators. The NIH is committed to supporting these services through competitively awarded contracts.
