Abstract

The extraordinarily wide spectrum of clinical manifestations associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, ranging from completely asymptomatic to fatal disease, represents an unexpected and unexplained clinical feature for an emerging highly contagious novel human pathogen. Host factors implicated in the innate or adaptive response to SARS-Cov2 as well as comorbidities or yet unidentified predictors are likely to be associated with such broad spectrum of clinical outcomes. In collaboration with a network of southern Italian medical centers we have collected de-identified clinical data and biological specimens from over 300 individuals with asymptomatic infection (as identified by SARS-COv2 serological screening for blood donation), mild, moderate, severe or critical COVID-19 diseases to analyze the genetic and immunological correlates of these clinical outcomes in a collaborative project with other NIAID intramural investigators.
