Abstract

Project Summary The Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center (XGSC) is the only national resource center for the Xiphophorus model system. It provides animals, biological samples, genomics, husbandry, disease and bioinformatics resources to the biomedical research community at large. It resides at Texas State University and has actively served the research community since 1993. Currently, the Xiphophorus are housed in static aquarium of different sizes. While functional, this set up leads to concerns over water quality, and its consistency across different aquariums. Additionally, static water can influence normal Xiphophorus development. We propose to purchase and install a re-circulating system to be used for maintaining and reproducing Xiphophorus to address these issues and aim to improve husbandry conditions for all species housed in the XGSC, in order to strength the rigor and reproducibility of the research animals for the biomedical research community users.
