Abstract
In October 2020, NIH issued the Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing âto promote the management and sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research.â The Policy âestablishes the requirements of submission of Data Management and Sharing Plans and compliance with approved Plans,â and âemphasizes the importance of good data management practices and establishes the expectation for maximizing the appropriate sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research, with justified limitations or exceptions.â NIH has issued supplemental guidance regarding elements of data management and sharing plans and estimating data management costs; however, Institutes have broad leeway to develop Institute-specific guidance materials. A variety of resources and tools for NIDDK-supported researchers and staff are needed to facilitate policy implementation and monitor compliance. In addition, educational outreach to drive a cultural shift where data sharing is the norm will enhance stewardship through potential of reuse of well-curated data.
