Abstract

Black women or socioeconomically disadvantaged women diagnosed with breast cancer are critical U3 (understudied, underrepresented, and underreported) populations of public health importance that are likely to have clinically relevant comorbidities, such as depression. To evaluate the hypothesis that women diagnosed with breast cancer experience changes in depression symptoms, we will leverage the Vitamin D and Omega-3 Trial (VITAL; National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH): 9R01AT011729; PI: Manson) and VITAL Depression Endpoint Prevention (VITAL-DEP) data. We will evaluate change in depressive multimorbidity and Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) data in 234 women before and after their breast cancer diagnosis compared to women without incident invasive cancer in VITAL. These secondary analyses have the potential to lead to greater awareness and expanded screening for depression in the cancer treatment and survivorship period, leading to critically needed patient navigation and support services addressing the mental health needs of U3 women.
