Abstract
Project Abstract This diversity supplement is requesting a 1-year supplement for Dr. Kemal, a pediatric emergency medicine fellow, to assist with her next immediate career stage of becoming a K-funded emergency medicine youth violence investigator. This supplement will provide key opportunities to strengthen her statistical analytic skills using large datasets, advance her expertise in qualitative methods, build foundational grant-writing skills, and receive mentorship from established clinician investigators. Within the foundation of an R01 focused on systems to improve care for children presenting to general EDs, Dr. Kemal will build analytic expertise using large databases by identifying ED touchpoints for intervention for youth with violent injury, in addition to developing expertise in qualitative data collection and analysis by determining the barriers and facilitators to delivering ED-based interventions. This work will identify critical opportunities for intervention for youth presenting to the ED with violent injuries and strengthen our understanding of where and how structural resources should be deployed, including funding for workforce development and hospital-based intervention programs. At the end of this supplement, Dr. Kemal will have the both preliminary data and the essential research and grant-writing skills to prepare a K23 submission to implement an ED-based intervention to decrease recidivism and adverse mental health outcomes for youth with violent injuries.
