Abstract

ABSTRACT Chronic alcohol consumption is a significant issue worldwide which can lead to addiction and damage throughout the body. The first step in alcohol metabolism is its conversion into acetaldehyde, which is a highly reactive and toxic molecule. The formation of acetaldehyde adducts with protein and DNA is a primary mechanism of ethanol toxicity. Acetaldehyde adducts are a direct biomarker for alcohol abuse. We intend to develop a facile and rapid enzyme-based assay for measuring acetaldehyde-protein adducts to assess alcohol use and alcohol-related health consequences.
