Abstract

Project Summary Heritable changes in phenotype not caused by changes to the DNA sequence are referred to as epigenetic. Epigenetics governs multiple aspects of normal cellular function and growth and development. Epigenetic effects are mediated by DNA modifications, non-coding RNAs, histone variants and modifications, higher order chromosomal structures, infectious proteins, and possibly other molecules. The objectives of the 2023 Epigenetics Gordon Research Conference (GRC) are to present a scientific program that reflects the breadth and depth of epigenetics research and to promote diverse and inclusive science and the careers of young investigators. The preliminary program includes speakers studying aspects of epigenetics in mammals (including humans), worms, flies, yeast, and flowering plants. Invited speakers range from early career investigators to senior leaders in the fields. Other important aspects of the GRC program include ample time for discussion and networking, poster preview talks for young investigators, poster prizes, and the GRC Power Hour, which addresses challenges faced by younger scientists and by scientists from underrepresented groups. The 2023 Epigenetics Gordon Research Seminar precedes the GRC and offers an opportunity for students and postdoctoral scholars to present their work and develop peer relationships. The GRS will also include mentoring sessions with senior scientists. Overall, the GRC and GRS programs will promote cross- disciplinary, innovative, and inclusive science that will advance the field of epigenetics. The GRC and GRS was cancelled in 2021 and thus the 2023 meetings are critical for maintaining vibrancy of the field.
