Abstract

Project Summary/Abstract Elastin, elastic fibers, and associated microfibrils are particularly abundant in arteries, ligaments, lungs, and skin but are also important in the tendons, eyes, and bone. Elastin is one of the longest-lived proteins in humans. It is deposited and cross-linked during development and growth, and then it remains metabolically stable over a lifetime. Elastin fibers are unique because they provide resilience to dynamic tissues but also elasticity, i.e., they deform under physiological forces and subsequently release stored energy to drive passive recoil. This conference will provide in-depth coverage of elastic tissue biology and will include the following: molecular properties of elastin; elastin and microfibril assembly; role of elastin in regulating cell signaling; mechanosensing of the elastin/microfibril-smooth muscle cell focal adhesions; aging of elastin-containing tissues; multi-omics and other technologies for elastic fiber system analyses; genetic diseases caused by mutations in genes encoding proteins in or associated with elastic fibers; bioengineering of elastic tissues; and translation of research to improve treatment of diseases that disrupt elastin-containing tissues. The aims of the conference are the following: Provide an inclusive environment and time for multidisciplinary and diverse scientists to gather and interact to catalyze research and new collaborations in the elastin biology; Drive translational research and breakthroughs in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of acquired and genetic disorders that involve elastic fibers and microfibrils; Promote the early integration of young scientists from diverse backgrounds into the elastin scientific community; Address issues related to rigor and reproducibility of data in the elastin biology field; Provide information and interaction to drive diversity in elastin-related field and science in general. The 2023 Elastin, Elastic Fibers & Microfibrils Gordon Research Conference will focus on recent novel, unpublished developments in the field and will stimulate discussions, collaborations, and novel hypotheses by participants from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. The accompanying Gordon Research Seminar will provide the trainees in the field a space to interact with established investigators, present their data, and learn new career development skills.
