NCATS FY22 LITCOIN NLP CHALLENGE INITIAL OBLIG

Abstract
For years, NIH has put a strong emphasis on FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse) data practices, but uptake of these practices has been slow at best. In addition, ensuring that data is FAIR is clearly important, but without contextual understanding of those data, even FAIR data are often of limited value to researchers hoping to reuse the data. One way to improve the discovery and use of FAIR data is to tie it to computationally-accessible knowledge modules and to align this process with the current mechanisms that they already use to report research results â scientific publications. To this end, the NCATS LitCoin Pilot Design Challenge seeks to spur innovation by rewarding the most creative and effective plans to construct the LitCoin submission platform. This platform will enable researchers to generate high-quality computationally-accessible knowledge and share it with the greater community, all in line with the mechanism theyâre already familiar with, the manuscript publishing pipeline. This Challenge brings together government, design experts, researchers and publishing houses and will lead to the design of further funding opportunities to implement the LitCoin Pilot Program, part of a broader conceptual initiative at NCATS to change the âcurrencyâ of biomedical research.
