Abstract

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey is an annual survey of a representative sample of the U.S. that is conducted through a questionnaire and examination including laboratory components. The NIDDK helps to support the cost of the diabetes component of the survey to determine the prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. by measuring A1c, fasting plasma glucose, 2-hour plasma glucose from an oral glucose tolerance test, and insulin levels. This funding support is halved with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Diabetes Translation. These measures provide data to examine the magnitude of diabetes and the health of people with diabetes in the U.S., as well as how it varies by sociodemographic factors, behavioral characteristics, health care, and comorbidity, using other information that is collected from the NHANES.
