Abstract

The Host Defense Group of the Laboratory of Respiratory Biology, Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, headed by Michael B. Fessler, MD now enters its 16th year at the NIEHS. Publications since the last annual report include: 1. A collaborative report on the relationship of serum antioxidant vitamin levels and respiratory morbidity and mortality in US citizens 2. A multi-author consensus statement from the American Thoracic Society on features and measurements of experimental acute lung injury in animals 3. A collaborative report on the role of hematopoietic cell SLC37A2 (a transporter) in atherosclerosis in a mouse model 4. A collaborative paper on the role of soluble epoxide hydrolase (an enzyme that modifies lipids) in host defense during pneumococcal pneumonia 5. A collaborative paper reporting the lineage and function of a novel subset of CD11b_ lung dendritic cells that promote Th17 immune responses during asthma Additional accomplishments since our last report include Dr. Fessler's Chairing of a Gordon Research Conference on immunometabolism (2022) and chairing of a scientific symposium on myeloid cell heterogeneity at the 2022 American Thoracic Society International Conference, Dr. Fessler's participation as an expert reviewer for a U.K. Medical Research Council grant study section, Dr. Fessler's delivery of oral presentations at the 2022 Southeastern Immunology Symposium and the 2022 Society of Toxicology meeting, and continuation of work under a CRADA with Novartis on development of biologicals for neutrophilic lung disease. Dr. Fessler has also continued his work as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology.
