Abstract
We have made significant advances on multiple fronts related to cardiovascular risk biomarkers, which is a new project for our group but has resulted in several published papers indicated below. Most notably, we have developed a new CVD risk score based on parameters generated by the clinical laboratory that can be automatically reported along with a lipid panel to help physicians be compliant with current CVD guidelines and to serve as a decision aid in statin therapy. We also have developed a new equation based on the standard lipid panel for estimating small dense LDL-C, which was superior to total LDL-C and also directly measured small dense LDL-C in predicting future events. We have also developed a new classification scheme and algorithm for categorizing abnormal lipoprotein phenotypes based on standard lipid testing. The classification of lipoprotein phenotypes will likely be valuable in routine clinical management of patients and may also help guide future drug development. Finally, we have participated in consensus guidelines/recommendations for various national and international organizations for the use of lipid-related cardiovascular biomarker testing.
