Abstract
Abstract the âNurturing Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Capacity in Africaâ (BRECA) program has for the last last five years supported the development of sustainable bioinformatics research capacity at Makerere University, to achieve a critical number of well-trained bioinformaticians in the long-term. This has built on the momentum of prior H3Africa supported consortia i.e., CAfGEN, TrypanoGEN, IBH3AU & H3BioNET. However studies of the bioinformatics students â Masterâs and PhD, were disrupted when all forms of education in Uganda, including that in tertiary institutions, was suspended and closed for 2 years (at the beginning of 2020) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Masterâs trainees have been able to complete their training on time, PhD trainees were unable to complete due to the requirement of a more rigorous training (in terms of research outputs and contribution to the filed). Therefore the purpose of this supplement application until August 2023 is to enable three PhD fellows complete their studies.
