Abstract
Project summary/ abstract: The proposed conference project will be centered on the âPlanning for Parkinsonâs Prevention: A trial design forumâ, held October 2nd to 3rd, 2022. The overall long-term objectives of this R13 program are to foster the education, training, and future research of investigators in the emerging translational and clinical neuroscience theme of preventative therapeutics for Parkinsonâs disease (PD); and to further early initiatives and trial efforts in PD prevention. These project objectives will be achieved through three specific aims (SAs). SA #1 is to provide an update on current research in prevention trial development with a focus on the critical trial design elements (via symposium sessions), and to share and compare emerging clinical trial protocols and initiatives (via presentations and discussion in an interactive session). The symposium portion of the forum will cover i) whom to enroll (genetically and prodromally at-risk populations), ii) what interventions to test, and iii) how to measure prevention of PD or its progression prior to diagnosis (e.g., with biomarker or clinical assessments). SA #2 is to increase research community engagement by enlisting at-risk advocates, providing a hybrid conference format, and publicizing our forum widely. SA #3 is to provide additional training in prevention therapeutics and facilitate networking opportunities for early career investigators through creation of an educational curriculum.
