Abstract
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention?s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to monitor the health and nutritional status of the U.S. population. The NHANES is a cross-sectional survey with personal interview and clinic examination conducted in two-year cycles, using a complex multistage probability sample, to produce nationally representative health statistics. The authority for NHANES derives from the 1956 National Health Survey Act, Public Law #652 of the 84th Congress, which authorized the DHHS Secretary to conduct a continuing survey of illness and disability in the Nation. The NCHS solicits proposals from collaborating federal agencies for sponsored content of the survey, including interview questionnaires, physical examination measurements, and laboratory assays. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has collaborated with NCHS for over two decades to fund components on heart, lung, sleep, and blood conditions and diseases in the NHANES.
