Abstract

In this year, we conducted four sub-projects. First, we employed oxygen sensors coupled with high-speed amperometry to evaluate fluctuations in brain oxygen levels induced by cocaine and established the role of drug action in the periphery in mediating these oxygen responses. Second, we employed this technology to examine the role of peripheral and central opioid receptors in mediating brain hypoxia induced by heroin. Third, we examined how alcohol potentiates the hypoxic effects of heroin. Finally, we examined relationships between physiological changes in oxygen in the brain and in peripheral tissues
