Abstract
Project 1: We developed a pregnant NHP model of ZIKV infection. In our initial study we observed ZIKV infection among dam and fetus absent clinical, laboratory, radiological, or pathological features of severe illness. Infants with some evidence of immunological memory to ZIKV at one year of life, are not protected from ZIKV re-exposure. Future work will focus on evaluating efficacy of ZIKV vaccine candidates in this model. Project 2: We successfully developed a NHP ICU model in healthy (uninfected) NHPs. This manuscript is in revision following initial submission and peer-review. We have extended this model to evaluate pathogenesis of bacteremia (E. coli and K. pneumoniae) and this work is ongoing.
