Abstract
Since early 2020, the Infectious Disease Pathogenesis Section (IDPS) has performed pre-clinical studies and reported the resulting pre-clinical pathology safety and efficacy data to the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), Moderna, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These initial studies involved pathology evaluations of multiple animal species and enabled smooth transition of the mRNA-1273 vaccine into human clinical trials. Since receiving Emergency Use Approval (EUA) from the FDA, the IDPS has continued its collaboration with the VRC in efforts to continue the advancement of the science behind this overwhelmingly safe and effective vaccine. During these studies, the IDPS participated in study design, processed over 1000 animal-sourced pathology samples, provided expertise related to sample collection and evaluation, and devised scoring algorithms to generate large datasets for multiple publications. Over the last year, the IDPS has co-authored a total of 13 COVID-19- related publications which have been accepted in a wide range of highly-respected publications including Nature, Cell, PLoS Pathogens, Immunity and The New England Journal of Medicine.
