Abstract

A major focus of this project is to delineate the molecular interaction between HIV gp120 and integrin a4b7. This interaction likely underlies the gut homing phenotype of HIV during the early stages of disease. Our recent efforts to define and describe the interaction between CD4 and a4b7 raise a host of new questions related to the function and regulation of CD4+ T cells. By gaining an understanding of how this interaction regulates CD4+ T cell function we hope to gain insight into mechanisms by which HIV preferentially targets specific CD4+ T cell subsets.
