Abstract

The Host Defense Group of the Laboratory of Respiratory Biology, Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, headed by Michael B. Fessler, MD now enters its 15th year at the NIEHS. Publications since the last annual report include: 1. A collaborative report on whole-genome sequencing of circulating cell-free DNA from human subjects 2. A collaborative report on albuminuria as a predictor of mortality from chronic lung disease, influenza, and pneumonia 3. An invited editorial for the lung specialty journal, AJRCMB 4. A collaborative paper on mitochondrial toxicity and inflammasome activation as a mechanism of toxicity of environmental organotin compounds 5. A collaborative paper on scavenger receptor B-I as a regulator of asthma, using a mouse model 6. A senior-author authoritative review article on neutrophil trafficking to the lung in disease 7. A senior-author high-profile paper published in Nature Immunology on the autophagic protein IRGM1 as a protein that guards against autoimmunity Additional accomplishments since our last report include designation of two of Dr. Fesslers papers as NIEHS Intramural Research Papers of the Month (Madenspacher et al., JCI Insight 2020; Rai et al., Nat Immunol 2021), continuation of work under a CRADA with Novartis on development of biologicals for neutrophilic lung disease, successful graduation of fellow Dr. Fei Zhao to take a role in technology transfer at NCI/NIH, awards to Dr. Fesslers fellows (Milstein Abstract Award, 8th Annual Meeting of the International Cytokine & IFN Society; eSymposium Scholarship Award, Keystone Symposia), selection of Dr. Fessler as a scientific advisor for two extramural trainees (Duke University, Boston University) and for a Tenure-Track Investigator at NIAID/NIH, and presentation by Dr. Fessler of an invited talk at the 2021 FASEB meeting (virtual) on Nutrition and Immunity. Dr. Fessler has also continued his work as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology.
