Abstract
The Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) has over 30 years of experience developing computational physiology models of a number of organ systems, including the heart [1][2][3], lungs [4][5][6] and GI system [7][8][9]. These anatomically-based multiscale models use finite element techniques that are able to capture the dynamic 3D geometry of an organ, as well as its anisotropic and inhomogeneous tissue structure. In addition, our methods enable us to include molecular level detail that is relevant to the physiological phenotype of the intact organ (e.g. [10]).
