Abstract

The visionary All of Us Research Program promises to create an extraordinary biomedical data resource for researchers and citizen-scientists to advance understanding of health and disease. By enrolling at least 1 million people, All of Us hopes to capture our nation's broad diversity in order to improve health of the most underserved populations. Despite documented health and healthcare inequities, SGM individuals are invisible in federal health assessments and longitudinal studies, which prohibits detailed data collection and targeted interventions. To be truly representative of our nation's broad diversity, the inclusion of SGM people in All of Us is critical. Doing so will ensure equitable representation of the US population, promote biological heterogeneity for high-quality discovery science, and foster diverse input on All of Us-based research studies. It is with excitement that we propose the formation of a National Sexual and Gender Minority Engagement Network to involve SGM people from across the country in realization of the All of Us Research Program's ambitious goals. We propose a comprehensive engagement strategy including SGM-appropriate recruitment materials and study procedures, culturally competent and culturally humble All of Us staff, a national network of community-based partners, SGM-specific educational programs and ambassadors to drive enrollment, continued engagement communications, and research result dissemination practices. Over the past three years, we have established a highly experienced, successful team and the organizational structures required to reach, engage, enroll, and retain diverse SGM communities. Because of these existing systems, we are confident in our ability to execute immediately upon award.
