Abstract
Diabetes and Diabetic Uropathy ? Abstract The proposed meeting is designed to bring together experts and novices interested in research directed toward understanding and ultimately treating/preventing diabetes in general with a particular focus on diabetic uropathy. The multidisciplinary nature of the program design will provide a great breadth in scientific insight and understanding that will benefit all that attend. Dr. Fraser, the PI, will coordinate the efforts of the Meeting Steering Committee, which, so far, will include Todd Purves, MD, PhD (Co?I) and Jonathan Routh, MD, MPH (Co?I) from the Division of Urology of Duke University Medical Center. The Duke team is working in partnership with Carolyn Best, PhD, the Director of Research for the American Urological Association and Tamara Darsow, PhD, Vice President of Research Programs for the American Diabetes Association. Other planning committee members include Rodica Pop?Busui, MD, PhD from University of Michigan, Lori Birder, PhD, from the University of Pittsburgh, Margot Damaser, PhD from the Cleveland Clinic, and Aria Olumi, MD from Massachusetts General Hospital and the Chair of Research for the American Urological Association. We are also anticipating potential funding and/or Planning Committee participation from representatives from DiaComp and the Society for Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction, and would expect that they would also have representation on the Steering Committee. The one?and?a?half proposed meeting will include expert speakers covering topics that include funding opportunities/research priority for diabetic uropathy, diabetes epidemiology, the effects of diabetes on non?urological systems for cross?fertilization of ideas and findings, and on diabetes effects on the urogenital system (i.e. diabetic uropathy). Activities of the Steering Committee will include meeting organization and planning, orchestration of travel plans for invited speakers, invitation of speakers to fill topic slots that have yet to be filled, fund raising to cover costs for the meeting, identification of and invitations to present to leading experts in the subject matter proposed talks, acquisition of vendors for food and hotel rooms, advertising of the event, collection of registrations fees, and the selection of early career researcher candidates (e.g. medical/graduate students, fellows, and junior faculty) to receive travel support from the R13 funds, if awarded. Invited Speakers who have already accepted the role include Vera Bril, BSc, MD, FRCPC, from the University of Toronto, Arthur L. Burnett, MD, MBA from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Michael E. DiSanto, PhD from Cooper Medical School at Rowan University, Christopher H. Gibbons, MD, from Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Joslin Diabetes Center Neuropathy, Derek LeRoith, MD, PhD from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, Rayaz A. Malik, MSc., MBChB, FRCP, PhD from Weill Cornell Medicine ? Qatar, Aruna Sarma, PhD, MHA, from University of Michigan Medical Center, and Hunter Wessells, MD from the University of Washington.
