Abstract
The purpose of this agreement is to characterize the biological response to dietary exposure to food-borne carotenoids, with focus on carotenoid metabolites. Very new methodology is available to a very limited number of scientists to measure carotenoid metabolites, and this Inter-Agency Agreement will capitalize on those new methods. Biological response will be assessed in several ways, including plasma ?-carotene and lycopene levels, plasma apo-carotenoid levels, plasma apo-lycopenoid levels, broader spectrum metabolomics, gene expression in blood, and microbiota characterization in the colon.
