SOCIOEMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN WITH PRENATAL ALCOHOL EXPOSURE

Abstract

The aim of this proposed collaborative research project is to measure the association between prenatal alcohol exposure and socioemotional and behavioral development in 4 to 6 year old children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. It is hypothesized that children exposed to alcohol prenatally will show higher rates of insecure attachment, depressive symptomatology, externalizing and ritualistic behaviors. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that the postnatal environment will influence the expression alcohol-related neurodevelopmental problems. Forty subjects will be recruited 920 high exposed, 20 low or unexposed) for study. This pilot will provide important pilot data to develop a variety of future studies on the socioemotional and behavioral development of socioeconomically disadvantaged children prenatally exposed to alcohol.
